Contact your representatives

U.S. Congress

NOTE about contacting representatives during COVID-19 outbreak

  • The general guidance on this page may not apply during the current health crisis.
  • Please use your best judgement to decide whether your members of Congress will be receptive to your message during this sensitive time.
  • Because Congressional staff is busy dealing with the pandemic, we encourage you to write or tweet instead of calling.

Take 5 minutes to tell your representatives that climate is important

Congressional offices track the number of constituents who call or email in support of a bill or an issue. More contacts correlate to more attention.  It may seem self-evident to you that climate matters, but elected representatives need to be formally told by many constituents -- and then told again over time.

You can phone during office hours, or phone later to leave a message.  If you're more comfortable writing than phoning, you can submit a web email comment instead.

Keep the message friendly, simple and personal

When you call or email, be respectful.  Speak your truth, make it simple and concise. Don't stress over what to say.

  • If climate is important to you, say that.
  • If you want them to support the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, say that.
  • If you want them to work in a bipartisan way on this big issue, say that.
  • Finish up by saying thanks and wishing them well.
  • Try to start or end with a heartfelt appreciation.  Recognize something positive that the member has said or done.  It doesn't have to be connected to climate or environment.
